After completing his carpentry and joinery apprenticeship, Tony worked on large scale residential developments and then set up the company with wife, Joy. Over the years the company diversified into manufacturing shoji screens and, later, manufacturing kitchens. Tony embarked on his first dental surgery project in 1987 and has never looked back.
Joy completed her training as a Dental Assistant after finishing high school. In 1987, the dentist she worked for part-time required a new surgery and engaged Tony to undertake the project. Joy juggled dental nursing, the business administration and raising two children. Joy continues to handle the administration of the company.
Ben commenced his apprenticeship with AL & JA Barber in 1993. After a brief time working on domestic projects, Ben re-joined the company some 15 years ago and is now employed as the site foreman/project manager. Ben is married to Tony & Joy's eldest daughter Katie Fox.
Katie, Tony & Joy's eldest daughter joined the company in 2002. Having worked for seven years in marketing, Katie decided to pursue her passion by completing a Bachelor of Colour and Design at the School of Colour and Design, Australia. Katie then worked as a freelance colour and design consultant for several years before joining the family business as our in-house designer and project manager.
Steve joined AJ Barber in 2006 as our full time carpenter and joiner. Steve and Ben work closely together on each job to ensure they are completed to our same exacting standards. Having attended high-school with Ben, they are like surrogate brothers!
Tony & Joy's youngest daughter, Emma, has a design degree and marketing background. Emma was based in Melbourne for the past five years, working as a freelance graphic designer and remotely lead our re-brand to AJ Barber in 2012. Having recently returned to Sydney, Emma decided to join the fun as our marketing manager.
